《Huamns and nature》Race to the Pole PPT Activity 1 Can you guess where this is? What do you know about Antarctica? Area: 14,200,000 km2 Population: 1,106 Lowest temperature ever: −89.2 ℃ Fun Facts: Antarctica is, on average, the windiest place on earth. The Antarctic Ice Sheet is the single biggest mass of ice in the world. There are 30 different countries that operate 80 research stations situated around the continent. The continent remains dark throughout the entire winter season. During the summer months the sun does not set in Antarctica. Antarctica is a desert. Exploring Antarctica What difficulties do you think explorers may face there?  What preparations do they need to make? Activity 2 Read and find out. When did the two journeys begin? What happed to the two teams? Activity 3 Read again and complete. Activity 4 Read and discuss. How did Scott’s team feel at the beginning of the journey?  How did they feel at the end? Why do you think this changed? Activity 5 Make inferences. Sometimes things are not stated explicitly in the text. To understand what is meant, you need to read between the lines.  Imagine you witness the following unrelated situations—what can you infer about each one? You see a woman pushing a baby stroller down the street. You are at a corner and see two parked cars at an intersection, and the driver in back starts honking his horn. You are walking down the street, and suddenly a dog comes running out of an opened door with its tail between its legs. Read the underlined sentences from Scott’s diary and letter. Write your inferences. Activity 6 Group Work: Think and share. Would you say that Scott and his team were losers? Why or why not? How do you understand Amundsen’s saying about Scott’s death “Captain Scott left a record, for honesty, sincerity, for bravery, for everything that makes a man”? Activity 7 Suffixes a letter or a group of letters that is added to the end of word to change its meaning. Activity 8 Pair Work: Read the sentences from Scott’s diary and letter again. Discuss what he was trying to say in each one. Highlight the parts that impress you most and explain why. Activity 9 Pair Work: Discuss. Why do you think the writer of the text used the word “race” in the title? Why was the world shocked by Scott’s death? Activity 10 Search online and share. Search online the main events in China’s Antarctica exploration.  Why do people try to explore the toughest part of the Earth? 关键词:北师大版高中英语必修二PPT课件免费下载,Huamns and nature PPT下载,.PPT格式;
